Careers in Geomatics
The field of employment for geomatic engineers is very diverse. Many join organisations that operate on a broader front in geomatic engineering including land and resource management, environmental remote sensing, surveys for engineering construction, surveys to detect structural deformation and hydrographic surveys for dredging operations.

A Multifaceted Profession
Geomatics is a multi-faceted profession which offers both women and men a wide variety of satisfying and well paid job options as a professional in measurement science and spatial information management.
Geomatics is concerned with measurement, representation, analysis, management, retrieval and display of spatial data concerning both the Earth's physical features and the built environment. The principal disciplines embraced by geomatics include the mapping sciences, land administration and management, geographic information systems, environmental visualisation, geodesy, photogrammetry, remote sensing and surveying.
Modern geomatics professionals are employed in such fields as:
- Computerised mapping
- Satellite remote sensing for environmental monitoring
- Precise satellite positioning and navigation for offshore oil exploration
- Land development and computer based land information systems
- Cadastral surveying
- Land administration and land management
- Utility management through geographic information systems
- Precise surveying for engineering construction
- Natural resource mapping and management
- Environmental planning
- Industrial measurement using machine and robot vision systems
Geomatics has its roots in land surveying but now embraces much wider fields in measurement science and spatial information systems.
What Geomatics Professionals Do
The demand for graduates in geomatics with a strong background in measurement and information technologies, and with experience in computing and graphics, is increasing rapidly. Graduates are applied scientists who are well paid and opportunities for work exist in both the government and private sectors. Many set up their own businesses. They work in Victoria and throughout Australia with a considerable number working overseas.
Degrees from The University of Melbourne are recognised throughout the world and the emphasis given to computing, environmental studies and measurements science generate strong demand. The sorts of jobs that might be expected for someone with a qualification in geomatics range from the design and layout of land subdivisions and roads to work conservation or resource assessment, cultural resources management (for development and heritage projects), working with mining companies, carrying out inspection measurement for quality control in industry, mapping the sea floor and implementing computer information systems for the management of land data in all its aspects.
Geomatics Graduates are able to get employment in a number of fields including those of Surveying, GIS, Environmental Management, Computing and more. Many of our highly qualified graduates obtain employment before graduation with most of the remainder getting a job within the first six months following graduation. Most students have worked within the Geomatics profession during the progress of their course due to our work experience requirement before graduation.
Read about some of our graduate students who are now working in diverse fields.
There is enormous variety within geomatics and it is of equal interest to both men and women. There are a rapidly increasing number of women in the profession. The range of working environments provides something of interest to everyone. Anyone with an ability in mathematics and science will find this career to be interesting and challenging.
Geomatics graduates from the University of Melbourne are capable of using and adapting the newest technologies to their work requirements.
