Subject objectives:

On completion of this subject students should to able to:
  • explain the history and operation of urban planning in Victoria
  • describe the origin and background of the land laws affecting our community
  • interpret the statute laws that affect surveying practice in Victoria

Generic skills acquired in this subject:

  • in-depth technical competence in at least one engineering discipline;
  • an ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution;
  • an understanding of the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of the professional engineer, and the need for sustainable development;
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and commitment to them;
  • a capacity for independent critical thought, rational inquiry and self-directed learning;

  • Score (out of a maximum of 5.0) = 4.0
  • General comments: For Gary Hunter: "Subject well taught even though material not very interesting"; "Gary successfully tried to make the lectures more interesting"; "The subject wasn't interactive enough".

Lecture and practical exercise details:

  • 48 hours of lectures (4 hours a week for 12 weeks);
  • The three components to the subject (Planning Law, Property Law and Surveying Law) will each consist of 16 hours of lectures;
  • Lectures are on Tuesdays from 9.00am - 11.00am, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Theatre, and Thursdays from 9.00am - 11.00am, Theatre A2;
  • Practical assignments are to be completed in students' own time.

Assessment:

  • A 3-hour OPEN BOOK written examination worth 70% at the conclusion of the course (24% Property Law, 23% Planning Law, 23% Surveying Law);
  • 3 written practical assignments in planning, property and surveying law will be issued monthly worth 10% each for a total of 30%;
  • Penalty for submissions after the due dates for each practical assignment = 1% off the total subject mark per day;
  • Students must pass all three sections of the subject to obtain a pass overall.
