Subject objectives:

  • On completion of this subject students should have a sound understanding of the diversity of GIS applications and their different requirements; a detailed knowledge of the system design and development process; and an understanding of the major institutional and management issues affecting GIS.

Generic skills acquired in this subject:

  • Develop group-based communication, problem-solving and report writing skills
  • ability to function effectively as an individual and in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, with the capacity to be a leader or manager as well as an effective team member
  • expectation of the need to undertake lifelong learning, capacity to do so
  • capacity for independent critical thought, rational inquiry and self-directed learning
  • openness to new ideas and unconventional critiques of received wisdom
  • Understand the significance of social and implementation issues relevant to information systems

Lecture details:

  • Four hours per week during Semester 2, 2008, have been allocated for lectures on Tuesdays 4:15pm - 6:15pm in Theatre C2 and Wednesdays 4:15pm tp 6:15pm in Doug McDonnel Th 521.

Assessment:

  • There will be a 3-hour written examination at the completion of the semester worth 70% of the total subject marks, plus a 30-minute research presentation (15%) and an essay (3000 words max - 15%).
  • Penalty for practical work submitted after the due date: 1% off the total subject mark per day overdue.
