Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information Systems

Course Description

The Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information Systems is primarily designed to meet the needs of graduates active in disciplines such as land administration, natural resource management, facility information management, environmental management and urban planning, and who wish to gain a sound working knowledge of the theory, technology and applications of GIS and associated science and technology. These are likely to be graduates (of both recent and some years standing) in areas such as engineering, geomatics, geography, planning, environmental science, agriculture and forestry. Thus the course structure has been designed to accommodate people of diverse academic and professional backgrounds who wish to gain both a broad working knowledge of GIS and specialised skills in perhaps one of the many applications of GIS technology.

The course has as its objectives that graduates should:

  • develop a sound knowledge of the theory and practice of GIS and associated subjects such as remote sensing, environmental visualisation, and spatial analysis;
  • develop a wide appreciation of the range of purposes to which GIS and spatial information science in general can be applied; and
  • develop strong practical skills in using and applying GIS and associated technologies to solve problems in fields such as land administration, natural resource management, facility management, environmental science, geography, planning, agriculture and forestry.

Duration

Overseas (and full-time local) students will complete the course in two semesters or approximately 9 months (note that Australian immigration requirements restrict part-time study to local students), while part-time local students may complete the course over a two-year period with approval from the course coordinator.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for the course is an appropriate undergraduate degree at pass level, however consideration will be given to applicants with other qualifications and at least two years relevant industry experience;

There is provision (for selected candidates) for articulation from the Graduate Diploma in GIS to the Master of Applied Science in GIS (either by research or coursework).

Subjects

Students are required to take a combination of compulsory and elective subjects. See here
