The Master of Geographic Information Technology (MGeoIT) is designed to meet the needs of graduates employed or wishing to be employed in the disciplines associated with land administration, natural resource management, facility information management, environmental management, urban planning and conservation.

Through this program students should gain a detailed knowledge of the theory, technology and applications of geographic information technology as a subset of the broader discipline of the management of spatial data.

Graduates admitted to this program are likely to be from the disciplines of engineering, surveying, geography, planning, environmental science, archaeology, agriculture and forestry.

Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the following qualities and skills:

  • An advanced understanding of the changing knowledge base in geographic/spatial information technologies, particularly geographic information systems, and their application.
  • An ability to use advanced computer systems and software for problem solving and decision support.
  • The ability to use Geographic IT as a team building and support tool in multi-disciplinary contexts.
  • An understanding of the practical and ethical issues of data acquisition, data access, data uncertainty, information management and data representation.

Comments

  • Individual subjects are available to Australian students under the Community Access Program (CAP).
  • There will be two intakes per year in February and July. For students without prior Geographic Information Systems education or experience, entry in the February intake is recommended due to the availability of the more fundamental subjects taught in that semester.
  • If required, an additional semester of research project study can be added to convert the program to the Master of Applied Science. The program then becomes an eighteen month program.
  • Direct entry to the Master of Applied Science (GIS) is also available for suitably qualified applicants.
