The Centre

The Centre provides a focus for research in Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) and Land Administration by building on research relationships and creating new links through national and international collaboration.

The Centre was established in 2001 within the Department of Geomatics at the University of Melbourne. Full-time researchers focus on problems at local, state, national and multinational levels.

Major publications, projects and events

	International Seminar on Land Administration Trends and Issues in the Asia and Pacific Region (19-20 August 2008 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) This Seminar aims to facilitate and promote discussion and dialogue on Land Administration systems within the Asia and Pacific Region. Following the 13th PCGIAP meeting in Korea, and endorsed by the Roundtable in Mongolia, PCGIAP through its WG3 has agreed to facilitate a two-day international Seminar on “Land Administration Trends and Issues in the Asia and Pacific Region” at the next PCGIAP meeting from 19-20 of August 2008 in Malaysia. Options and implications arising from that seminar will be considered by PCGIAP and if all parties agree any new arrangements could be presented for consideration to the next United Nations Regional Cartographic Conference for Asia and the Pacific scheduled for 2009.
	Melbourne Uni Indonesian SDI Training Course A training course on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) was successfully designed and conducted by Centre for SDIs and Land Administration, The University of Melbourne for Indonesian Government and participants from the National Coordination Agency for Surveys and Mapping of Indonesia from the 19th-30th November 2007. 	Spatially Enabled Government and Society The Centre has recently published a book on Spatially Enabled Societies. It is dedicated to Professor Ian Williamson and includes contributions from Australian and international experts: Learn more about the book here: Towards a Spatially Enabled Society, Edited by Abbas Rajabifard. In other SEG news: Professor Ian Williamson was recently appointed Chair of the UN supported PCGIAP Working Group on "Spatially enabled government". Dr. Abbas Rajabifard was made Vice-Chair. Here, Prof. Williamson explains the challenges set by transformational spatial technologies. These technologies, if introduced in government and society, can assist delivery of sustainable development and transform the way information services are delivered. The Centre has named this vision iLand. Land information, spatial information and more specifically the cadastre will become fundamental tools of government. Read more here and here. See more here.

	Integrating built and natural environment datasets The Centre is involved in a new ARC linkage project dealing with integration of spatial datasets. See the project website for more information. The Centre conducted a workshop on data integration as part of the UNRCC-AP & PCG-IAP-WGS3 in September. Click here for more information and results.
