The Victorian Government, through Spatial Information Infrastructure, Strategic Policy & Projects, Department of Sustainability & Environment (DSE), is the key sponsor of the Centre and has committed core funding to its operations.

The primary objective of the Centre is to undertake fundamental and applied research in the broad area of SDIs and land administration. Much of the research undertaken in the Centre uses the State of Victoria as a working laboratory to obtain research data, and test solutions and outcomes. As a result of the core funding provided by DSE, the Director of Spatial Information Infrastructure assumes the Chair of the Centre's Advisory Committee.

The University of Melbourne also significantly supports the research program of the Centre through provision of facilities, support staff and research infrastructure.
