What is Geomatics?

Geomatics is the science and technologies of three dimensional measurement, mapping and visualisation

Geomatics uses 21st century technologies for measurement, management, presentation and analysis of earth-based (spatial) data. This data comes from many sources including earth-orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors and ground-based instruments. It is processed and manipulated with state-of-the-art information technology, computer software and hardware.

It encompasses areas such as computerised mapping, satellite remote-sensing for environmental monitoring and precise positioning and navigation using the satellites of the Global Positioning System.

It also covers land development and the associated cadastral law and surveys for land titles.

Geomatic engineering plays an important role in the building of large engineering structures and their subsequent monitoring to check there is no movement or deformation.

Geomatic engineering is involved in the development and use of computer-based spatial information systems that are designed to support the engineering infrastructure of large cities: water, electricity and gas supplies are examples.
